Garden Club President: Special Award
David Green has been a member of the Meon Valley Garden Club for over 60 years and first joined the committee in 1959. Whilst he has held many posts over the years including Chair and Vice-Chair, he has been President for over 20 years and is still going strong.
In continued support of the club, David and his wife Tricia have decided to donate a vase as the latest trophy for presentation at the Annual Summer Show. The David Green Special Award will be presented to the member with the most points across the whole show. Its inaugural presentation will be at this year’s Summer Show on Sunday 22 July.
Originally from Hamble, David now lives in Swanmore in the family home built by his father in the 1930’s. His love of gardening developed at Highfield School in Liphook during the Second World War where he grew carrots and strawberries, along with other tasty crops, to supplement his ‘ration’ diet which included kipper sausages!
David reflects on the many friends, hard work, much pleasure and rewards that gardening has given him over the years. “I especially enjoy giving a cup, often for the first time, to a slightly bewildered youngster with the admiring parents watching”, he recalls. He loves growing sweet peas, the freshness and perfume of the mid-summer roses and the occasions when his Cybidian orchids flower in profusion, something he rarely achieves with his parsnips and melons.
The show is held at the Meon Hall at Pound Hill and starts at 1.30pm. In addition to the hall of exhibits which include flowers, vegetables and handicrafts there is a raffle, produce and plant sale, refreshments with scrumptious home baked cakes and scones as well as a variety of outdoor stalls and entertainment. There is ample parking and entry is £1 with accompanied children admitted free. For further details see the club website at Droxford Village Community: Meon Valley Garden Club. For those wishing to enter exhibits in the show, the full schedule and entry forms will be available to download from the website from 1st July 2018.
